The Problem
Online translators stop working when you need them most.
Expensive mobile data, unavailable Wi-Fi, cut-off roaming. On international trips, in rural areas, buildings with weak signal, or simply abroad without a local data plan — translation fails at the critical moment.
Trago was born from a real need: its creator lives in the UK and faces the daily challenge of following British English in real conversations — and needed a tool that worked regardless of whether a connection was available.
The Solution
Trago processes everything on your device.
Trago is an Android app for voice translation between Brazilian Portuguese and British English. Speak in one language and see and hear the translation in the other — with speech recognition and translation happening locally on the device, without depending on external servers during normal use.
Architecture
Offline-first, by design.
Trago is designed, from the ground up, to work without an internet connection — from voice capture to translation. This choice prioritises working anywhere, without depending on network coverage, mobile data, or Wi-Fi.
Translation and speech recognition models run locally on the device. Your translation history is stored locally and is not synced to any server.

All capabilities below are implemented in code and under validation. None have passed full validation on a real device yet — that is the next step before launch.
Both directions, between Brazilian Portuguese and British English. The PT→EN direction depends on the Portuguese model, still being integrated for in-app on-demand download.

Validation
What we are validating.
Speech recognition in real-world environments is one of the biggest technical challenges of an offline translator — background noise, regional accents, and compatibility between software components used to process audio locally. We are testing and comparing different approaches before committing to the final version, prioritising accuracy over speed of release.
